Cross format artistic friendships are a beautiful thing, and Before the Story bears the fruit of one such friendship.
James Kates is a true multi-(surf, film and photo)-instrumentalist, as talented with cameras of the moving image and stills variety as he is with his hand wrapped around a boog (not to mention hitting the skins for the Pinheadz). And Russel Webster, well he’s just a gifted multi-everything sonic. The two intersect where the escarpment meets the sea on the Coal Coast, NSW, and the longtime collaborators on grand, sweeping cinematographic projects like 2018’s The Fjordsman, have come together in a new format for the Before the Story.
Lockdown forced many to streamline their daily routine, and for James Kates that meant pausing his endless pursuit of thickset waves and shifting his concentration to the still image. Instead of a licence to roam his wave-rich extended coast, he was confined to the myriad rocky crags in front of him, chasing light, angles and backwash rather than tubes at daybreak. This daily routine ended with a stroll and a java with Russ and Shining Bird frontman Dane Cook. Russ’ usual, endless stream of gigging in his multitude of musical acts (Shining Bird, The M1, Tropical Strength etc) was brought to a halt, and so he turned his compositional skills to prose.
Cross-pollination was inevitable, and Beyond the Story is a beautiful printed document in the form of a Coffee Table book of photography and verse, with a 7inch Vinyl accompaniment. A tangible relic of a slower time.
